Jesus said, Blessed are the Meek

"Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth." Matthew 5:5

I used to think that the word meek meant weak. In English meek translates as mild or soft. But the Greek word used here is Praus. According to the Blue Letter Bible App, this word would describe a powerful war horse willing to go into the thick of battle as directed by its rider. Don't miss this-the war horse is in service to the rider, it's Master.

This would lead to the question, whom do you serve? Being a Christian does not mean one is weak. Instead being a Christian in every sense of the word, is to be strong in the battle.

It requires strength. A strength that can only come from our Master.

In this world today, I wrestle with the call to be light in the darkness, a city on a hill, the salt of the earth. Jesus warns in Matthew 5:13.

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."

I don't want to lose my saltiness. I want to stand strong when the world walks in confusion over issues like abortion, transgenderism, and when wrong is called right and right is called wrong.

Isaiah 5:20 "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter."

The world doesn't need more confusion.

We need God.

"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, 'My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'" Psalms 91:1-2

We need Jesus.

"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the Truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" John 14:6

We need the Holy Spirit.

"For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.'" Romans 8:15

We need His Word. For Scripture tells us in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

We need strength. For when we are weak, He is strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10.

We need wisdom. James 1:5 calls us to seek the wisdom of God, that we may become perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

"Jesus teaches us, Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

Dear Jesus, I want to be meek. Strong but gentle. Quiet but firm. May we be as the powerful war horse, ready to serve you, our Master, in the battle. For you have promised us that when we are meek, we are blessed and will inherit the earth. Clear away any confusion we might feel and grant us the strength to stand. In your precious name, we pray. Amen.
