A serious election is about to take place in Minnesota, but few will show up, thinking this election is of little importance. If you wonder why education is suffering in Minnesota, it could be due to the fact that Minnesotans are apathetic to grassroots campaigns.

According to the *Center of American Progress, CAP, school board members are the largest group of elected officials in our country. The article claims 82,000 folks serve in the important role as a school board member across America. Yet, voter turn out is extremely low,. Often only 5 to 10 percent folks turn out to vote on School Board elections.

Critical decisions are made daily by school board members across the nation. School boards oversee district leadership, budgets, and funding allocation. They approve curriculum and course offerings. They approve the books offered to students in their libraries. They decide when sex education can be taught, what should be taught and at what age.

A quick search of some of the issues that current board members are running on are:

  • Safer schools

    Accountability of students and staff

  • Teaching the basics in reading, writing and math, science and factual history

  • Choosing curriculum

  • Choosing extra curricular activities

  • Achieving academic excellence

  • Parental rights.

  • Informed leadership

  • Support for teachers

This reveals the importance of our school boards. And why we should be more involved in these ground level elections.

You may ask, what can I do? The options are many.

  • Run for this important office.

  • Research those who are running and support them financially.

  • Become part of the volunteer staff needed to help a candidate.

  • Show up for meetings.

  • Be aware of any changes coming down the line.

  • Be informed.

In Minnesota, you can vote NOW for your candidate. You don't need to wait for Election Day. It's never been easier to vote!

God's Word is all about governing in truth and righteousness. Let's do our part!

Deuteronomy 1:13

"Choose some wise, understanding and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will set them over you."

Good reminder. We all need to get out and vote. The quality of our children/grandchildren are at stake.
